NatureKids
December 2006
Activity Update

Welcome to the NatureKids December Activity Update!  We hope you’ve had an enjoyable and productive month, and we are excited to share with you all we’ve been doing here at the NatureKids Foundation.

First and foremost, we are excited to announce the launch of the new NatureKids Website, www.naturekids.org.  Please visit us on the web to learn more about our important work, find out about volunteer opportunities and upcoming events, and to learn more about donation options.

This month NatureKids students participated in the first annual Marine Turtle Festival on the beaches of Progreso near Drake Bay.  As part of students’ community service requirement, kids, teenagers and parents helped the festival’s organizers clean-up and patrol the beach, provide a safe home for the marine turtles, care for the turtle’s eggs and help put together educational materials to teach the local kids about these important visitors to the Drake Bay community.  The Marine Turtle Festival was a huge success, and NatureKids students from Drake Bay and the surrounding communities were proud to be a part of the inaugural effort.  To read more about this festival please see the attached story (PDF format) written by our teacher in Drake Bay, Gabriela Atencio.

In both of our schools, NatureKids teachers, coordinators, students and parents are busy preparing for the Community Holiday Parties and End of the Year Graduation Ceremonies. At the parties, students will perform their final projects, sing songs, enjoy locally prepared food, and decorate their own holiday trees.  The parties will also give NatureKids staff a chance to visit with the families touched by our program, and we are looking forward to hearing their feedback and inviting them to help us in our visioning process for the coming year. Because of the generous donations of NatureAir employees and the friends of our program, we are proud to announce that this year we are able to give out Christmas gifts to each and every one of our students.

In December NatureKids students in Salitral submitted drawings of their families, towns and communities for the 2007 NatureKids Drawing Contest. After a tough selection process from over 60 drawings, NatureKids coordinators chose the top 12, and these drawings will now be put together to form the 2007 NatureKids Calendar.  For those of you interested in purchasing a calendar and helping to support our important work, please email us at info@naturekids.org. Additionally, calendars will be available in the “Shop” section of our website in the coming weeks.

Finally, on behalf of the kids, families and communities of Costa Rica, we wish you and yours a Happy Holiday Season and a Prosperous New Year.  A big thanks to each of you who has supported us, and we look forward to working with you in the coming year!

Have a beautiful day!

Best,

The NatureKids Team

Michelle Kreger, Administrative Director
Gena Terry, Educational Director
